Beaufort County’s Transparency Efforts: Illinois, Follow Suit!
Transparency in government isn’t always free.
For school districts, posting a check register online costs virtually nothing. And although counties, or other government entities, might have larger, initial costs to implement transparency, the benefits and eventual savings transparency offers make the effort worthwhile.
Too much waste, confusion about where tax dollars go, and the lack of accountability resting on the shoulders of government, are just a few reasons why Illinois needs transparency.
The link below talks about transparency efforts in Beaufort County, S.C. Beaufort Council Chairman, Weston Newton, thinks the cost of transparency is a worthwhile expenditure, saying, “In this day and age of technology, we believe the people’s business ought to be done in public,” he said. “In order for the public to hold us accountable, the public needs to know and see and hear what we’re doing.”
