Executive Transparency

Transparency took center stage in Obama’s first days as President of the United States. His initial actions reveal promising signs that his administration will shine more light into government spending and decision-making.

As noted in the Washington Post, Obama said in a FOIA memo, “The Government should not keep information confidential merely because public officials might be embarrassed by disclosure, because errors and failures might be revealed, or because of speculative or abstract fears.” He added, “In responding to requests under the FOIA, executive branch agencies (agencies) should act promptly and in a spirit of cooperation, recognizing that such agencies are servants of the public…Openness will strengthen our democracy and promote efficiency and effectiveness in Government.”

Let’s see if Obama’s home state will follow his example. You can find executive orders here.
