Illinois Reform Committee Unveiled

According to the Chicago Sun-Times article today, Illinois Senate President John Cullerton and Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan are unveiling a Joint Legislative Reform Committee. This committee, along with Reform Illinois Now implemented by Governor Pat Quinn could potentially bring some much-needed reform to the state level.

“A sad lesson from the recent impeachment and conviction of former Gov. Blagojevich is that we need to strengthen Illinois laws concerning the operation of state ethics commissions, procurement policy and to safeguard pension funds,” said Senate President Cullerton

The legislature will return from break tomorrow, after taking off Monday and Tuesday. Reform in Illinois should be the first agenda issue and we may see it reach a vote by the end of this week. However, many politicians have already introduce massive spending bills in the recent weeks.

House Speaker Mike Madigan stated, “We can still improve oversight and disclosure requirements to increase transparency and permit citizens, watchdog groups and the press to better monitor government operations.”

Hearing Madigan express a need for increased transparency and allowing the public to monitor the government are exactly the words that should be coming out of every politician’s mouth.
